The Nicene Creed is the end-point in a long journey; it will help, in understanding that Creed, to know some stops along the way. One key stopping point in Nicene history is the relation of the Divine Father to the Son: Is it one of equality? Another is the power and status of the Spirit in the Godhead: Is the Spirit God? Does the Spirit lead us to God? These two trajectories will guide our discussion of the pilgrimage of theology to the Council of Nicaea, led by Rev.
