Dr. Thompson is Senior Advisor for Strategy and Development at the Institute for Cross Cultural Mission based in Washington, D.C. In addition, he is a pastor, scholar, writer, and an artist. He holds an M.Div from Covenant Seminary and PhD from University of Virginia. He is co-author (along with Reverend Duke Kwon) of a forthcoming book, Reparations: A Christian Call to Repentance and Repair from Brazos Press.
Our reactions to the idea of reparations—compensating African Americans for the abuses of slavery—may vary from support, to uncertainty, to skepticism. Should we leave the past in the past? Are reparations warranted? Is it politically or economically feasible? Would it be effective? Regardless of our starting point, it is an important issue for us to consider and become more informed about as we continue discussions about race in America. As our guide this week, we are fortunate to have a scholar who has studied and addressed the issue from a theological and biblical perspective.
