YouTube description

This interview may be of special interest to those almost in college, considering college, or interested in good teaching. I have known Dr. Moffitt for more than 25 years. We met each other through our respective girlfriends (whom we both later married :). We were fellow History majors at Grove City College and as such, had many classes with two unique professors. I call them 'Spiky Professors' in our talk because they were unusual in their environment. They both delighted in making students appropriately uncomfortable, and as such, we both learned a lot.

We discuss

  • When it might be a good sign if you are mad at/scared of a professor
  • What it means as a student to be 'thrown into the deep end.'
  • How primary sources shaped our education
  • The connection between reading great literature and good academic research
  • Dr. Moffitt's thoughts on 'safe spaces' in education
  • How teachers and students can balance a Christian identity with being properly 'open' to different ideas.
  • How philosophy can be enormously practical and strengthening to one's faith
  • How the virtue of charity can be crucial in a good education.

Dr. Moffitt teaches at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and happens to be one of the world's foremost authorities on the Book of Hebrews. Among other published works, he is a contributor to a forthcoming work from Oxford University Press on the book of Hebrews and the General Epistles.

In short, he is a man worth listening to. I hope that you enjoy our conversation.
