Western culture presumes a definition of health that is defined by the absence of illnesses. And while avoiding illness, of any kind, might be desired, it isn't always available. A biblical picture of health stems from the concept of shalom, which doesn't necessarily depend on the absence or presence of illness. Health is seen as a function of right relationship, with God, with others, and with the self. In other words, peace.
