Jeremiah 1:4-10 (ESV)

The Call of Jeremiah

  1. Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

  2. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

  1. Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.”

  2. But the Lord said to me,

“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;
for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,
and whatever I command you, you shall speak.

  1. Do not be afraid of them,

for I am with you to deliver you,
declares the Lord.”

  1. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me,

“Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.

  1. See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,

to pluck up and to break down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”

Luke 4:21-30 (ESV)

  1. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

  2. And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph's son?”

  3. And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.”

  4. And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

  5. But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land,

  6. and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

  7. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

  8. When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.

  9. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.

  10. But passing through their midst, he went away.
