What is prayer?

Jesus' prayers aren't just significant because he's praying on earth as the model human. They're more significant than that. Jesus is showing us who eternally he is.

Jesus says in John 5: "Very truly I tell you, the son can do nothing by himself." The son always depends on his Father. That is who he eternally is. For him, everything flows from his communion with his Father.

And so for eternity, the Son has enjoyed communion with his Father and prayed to him. So the Son, then, is the first prayer.

And the salvation that he brings is a sharing of his own communion with his Father. And so prayer is learning to enjoy what Jesus himself has always enjoyed.
